If you’re tired of the slow downs and errors of Internet Explorer, then maybe it’s time to try something new, perhaps safer and more efficient. It’s a free web browser called Mozilla Firefox. It’s a good idea to have more than one web browser anyway; so why not give this one a try?
Necessary Things: Computer with Internet access, Brief downloading knowledge, Access to Mozilla Firefox’s website
1. Go to the website listed below in the Resources section (http://www.mozilla.com).
2. Once there, click the large button on the screen labeled “download Firefox–free.” Then wait for the download to begin. A dialog box then appears that asks “would you like to save this file?” Click the “save file” button on the left.
3. Once the file is downloaded, click install and follow the on screen step by step prompts. Your browser will restart with Google.com as your home page. If you would like to change this, go to “tools” on the top menu and select the “main” tab.
4. Type in your new home page web address and click the OK button on the bottom of the screen to save this new address. The next time you open Mozilla, the page should automatically default to this.
5. You won’t notice many differences in using Mozilla but you may not be able to access some websites that are not well-matched with Mozilla; so keep Internet Explorer around. The buttons may be a bit different, but you can still have all the tool bars on the top of it, such as yahoo and Google.
6. your “favorites” are now known as “Bookmarks” and can be located under the Bookmarks menu. To save a favorite page, click “bookmarks,” and “bookmarks this page. You can also organize by placing it into a folder, alike to the process in Internet Explorer.
7. HELP! Don’t worry, menus are virtually alike in this web browser as to Internet Explorer, but if do you get stuck, click the help menu and explore the choices beneath it. You can also search by topic if you are looking for something specific.
8. Firefox also has a neat feature called “Foxmarks” where you can install an add-on, save a user name and password and then right of admission your favorites on any computer with Firefox by entering your username and password. This is an invaluable feature and built right in to the browser.
9. MOST OFTEN USED FEATURES: If you would like to make the text size bigger, simply click the “view” menu on the top of your screen and then select “text size.” If you would like to go back to your starting page, just click the house on the top of the page. If you would like to cool down the page, hit the F5 key. The back and forward button functions stay the same. History is also the same. You can set the number of days, etc. and customize it to your needs. You can still save passwords inside the browser if that is something you prefer to do.

Just when you think Google can’t do any more to improve their search results, they continue to fine tune in subtle ways. And that’s a good thing, because when you do spot these improvements, you will wonder what took them so long to implement.
One improvement is adding more information in search results so you can quickly determine if it’s useful or not to click on the link.
For example, how many times have you search for something only to click on a search result that was an old forum post? For the most part, forums can be a great resource for information. But not if it’s old or there are no replies to the post.
Now you can see if the post is current, because Google will display the date of the forum post along with information of the forum thread in the search result.

When Google finds a result, and it’s a forum post, it now categorizes the search result (as a forum post) and provides further information about the thread such as the number of posts and authors in the thread.
Another example is with video searches. Google now displays the duration and the average rating (if it can find one).

No more watching long useless videos. With the time and rating information, you know exactly how long it will take to watch the video and if it’s worth your time.
Sometimes searching for something can bring you to a page that was written in a different language. You know the page must be relevant to what your searching for, but you just can’t read it. Instead of clicking on the link to the page, click on the link ‘Translate this page’ link to the right of the site link.

By clicking on it, Google will automatically translate the page to the default language setting of your browser.
TIP: If you comes across a page in a different language, other than searching for it, copy and paste the URL into Google search box. Google will return the search result with the ‘Translate this page’ link next to the result.
Google offers many specific types of search portals such as images, maps, news, shopping, etc. Instead of going to each portal, the search result menu now includes relevant links based on your search.

Take notice there is also a definition link that takes you to Answers.com for a quick definition of your search word.

Now a days, shopping on the Internet for the best price can be a snap, if you use search engines such as Yahoo Shopping or Shopzilla that compare prices and offers reviews. Google is finally catching up with their product and lets you compare prices.

As of now the compare prices feature seems to be limit to a few catagories (mostly electronics), but look for that to change over time.
Google is well known for some of their obscure search tricks and some of them are most useful when you are in hurry. One of them is checking if your airline flight is on time.

…If only it could tell me how long the Security line is.
Seen any other new improvements from Google not mentioned here? Leave a comment and let us know what you find.

Internet Explorer has some quirks as we all know. However, if there is any chance that you may uninstall Internet Explorer, there could be some problems. In fact, you may not even be able to start Windows with a full functioning desktop.
Apparently, Internet Explorer version 6 and 7 are not getting along. If you upgrade IE, uninstall, reinstall, or download a version from Yahoo, Google, or Adobe, then you may lose your Windows functions after you shut down your computer. When Windows starts up again, it boots to only a blank desktop screen. A popup window will give an error code of “iertutil.dll is missing or corrupt.” There is not a way to use Windows or see your taskbar. However, we can solve this quickly with the help of another computer and we can prevent this type of situation from happening again with all Windows programs. (more…)

Is it hard to be a hacker? How do I become a hacker? I want to learn more about hacking! Those are the things that I often hear or see on forums. Somebody asked me the other day if I know how to hack a site and whether it’s hard or not. I’m no hacker, I’m just a journalist. However, Petko D. Petkov aka pdp is a world-renowned hacker who in his latest blog post describes how easy it can be for someone with just a bit of skill to hack into military and government sites - .mil and .gov that is.
He won’t give you the tools or tell you where to get them from, but he does explain how easy it is to exploit certain vulnerabilities. He says that the web is full of open CITRIX gateways and while he was performing some CITRIX testing he hacked a lot of GUIs and “played” around with .ICA files. (more…)
