Although it was released to manufacturing on April 21, 2008, the third and last service pack for Windows XP has yet to make it to end users. Despite this, Microsoft has already made available the first update tailored on XP SP3. Update for Windows XP (KB942763) is designed to integrate with both Windows XP SP2 and SP3, and to tweak the Daylight Saving Time settings on the operating systems. Microsoft released KB942763 on the same day it RTM‘d XP SP3, in an effort to correlate automatically the computer clock with the correct date in 2008, following the changes introduced via Daylight Saving Time laws in markets around the world.
“The update changes the time zone data to accommodate daylight saving time (DST) changes in several countries. This update also includes other DST-related changes, time zone-related changes, and settings-related changes. This is a cumulative update rollup that includes all the changes that were previously released in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) articles 928388, 929120, and 933360,” Microsoft revealed.
Similar updates have been released for a range of operating systems in addition to XP SP2 and SP3, including Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs, Windows Embedded for Point of Service, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003. Neither Windows Vista SP1 nor Windows Server 2008 have anything to do with KB942763. The Redmond company is offering additional information related to the time changes affecting its products via the Daylight Saving Time Help and Support Center.
“When you apply this update, you may receive the following message: ‘Update cannot be installed as a newer or same time zone update has already been installed on the system.’ This message indicates that you have already applied the correct update or that Windows Updates or Microsoft Update has automatically installed this update. No additional action is required to update the Windows operating system software,” Microsoft added.

There is a new tweaking Powertoy for Windows Vista users. Its called TweakVI. Best of all the basic version of this utility is completely free!

It seems once again a 3rd party has beat Microsoft to the punch by creating a PowerToy utility for Windows Vista only. Works on all Vista versions and on both 32bit and 64bit flavours.
The feature list of options and plug-ins to tweak is impressive such as IE and Firefox Tweaks, hacking the Start menu, putting an image on Internet Explorer's toolbar, changing how windows animate and optimizing your CPU's cache.
- Activate hundreds of hidden Windows Vista settings
- clean your registry
- activate system and software restrictions
- display detailed system information
- create a 256 MB RAM drive
- protect your privacy
- clean your hard drive
- manage TrueType fonts
- improve your internet connection
- optimize your CPU
- optimize your RAM
The tweaking utility allows you fine tune and optimize features to increase the speed of your Windows Vista system without going through a manual process like modifying the registry.
Here are some example screen shoots of options.

For those that are not planning to install Windows Vista anytime soon, and want the styles and feel Vista has to offer when it comes to eyecandy and functionality, there are a few ways you can do this which can change not only the skins to Vista, but also icons, menus and your bootup screens.
The most popular aspect of Vista is its
Aero - Transparency and 3D Flip.
To get opaque windows on Windows XP, you can try out a various software packages. Forget WindowsBlinds, thats not a true enablement of the Vista experience, what you really need is the
BricoPack Vista Inspirat Ultimate 2. This free pack which modifies Windows XP system files in order to change its appearance and make it look like Windows Vista. Before installing this BricoPack, please read the instructions page "about the BricoPacks". You must not install this pack on Windows x64 OS. However I would say this is the easiest and quickest way to change your 32 bit Windows XP OS to Vista Styles.
There is an app called WinFlip which can give you the similar experience of Windows Aero in Vista. It runs in the taskbar and Aero effects (3D flip) can be invoked by pressing the Windows key + Tab. Get it here Download WinFlip
Other applications out there that do similar changes are:
-
SphereSite -
Actual Transparent Window-
WindowFX-
Y'z ShadowIf your a do it yourself type of person and want to teak things individually yourself from scratch, you can modify the Windows XP OS and get the Vista Themes separately following these steps:
1. Get the
Uxtheme Multi-patcher which will allow you to use any 3rd party msstyle theme on Windows XP/SP1/SP2 or Windows Server 2003 (with Themes enabled) just by patching the uxtheme.dll (dynamic link library), then reboot after for the changes to take effect.
2. Get a Windows Vista Theme such as the
VistaVG or
AeroVG Theme, (browse through them here at http://themes.belchfire.net/vista-themes.html) and unzip it and copy it to
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes directory.3. Get some nice Hi-res wallpaper from
gnome-look.org or check out
my previous article on pimping your desktop with wallpaper.
4. Get a Windows Vista
Sound Pack and put them in the to
C:\WINDOWS\MEDIA folder. Then in the
Control panel > Sounds and change the sound for respective events.
5. For enabling the Aero look you can try the links I specified above for details and options.

This guide shows you how to increase Internet Explorer 7’s connection limit from 2 to 16 which increases the speed of many web pages.
What Are Connections?
When you connect to a website your computer establishes connections with the web server(s). One connection might be a graphics server, another connection may be an ad server and so on. Once the connection has received what it asked for it is disconnected and used for something else.
By default IE7 is set to only be able to open 2 or 4 connections at a time. If you have broadband and you use tabs in IE7 or you visit sites that use lots of connections this tweak will increase the speed of IE7 a little. (more…)

Sometimes making your PC ‘run’ faster is just about changing the way programs run e.g disabling splash screens. This tip will make your machine feel faster, by increasing the speed with which menus load, by removing the delay between clicking on a menu and that menu being displayed, which is enforced by XP.
To enable this tweak do the following:
1. Go to the Start Menu and then click on ‘Run’
2. Type in ‘Regedit’ then click on ‘Ok’ (more…)

The Automated System Recovery (ASR) is one of the aspects in Windows Vista that has been evolved with the introduction of Vista Service Pack 1. A Windows application programming interface, ASR is designed to keep track of and record the configuration of disks and volumes on a system. In the end, ASR comes into play in cases of bare metal recovery scenarios. Ahead of restoring the operating system as well as the associated content including programs and data, ASR will take the disks and volumes to their original state. The Automated System Recovery will manage disks in accordance with Critical and non-Critical labels, depending on whether they do or do not contain system state or operating system components.
“ASR in Vista and Server 2008 is tightly integrated with the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and presents a writer interface, which is a significant change from Server 2003 and XP. During a backup the ASR writer reports metadata describing all the disks and volumes on the system. (more…)
