XP Service Pack 3 Goes Live

Like busses you wait ages for a Service Pack, then two come along at once. Hard on the heels of Vista SP1, which mostly went without a hitch, we can now look forward to XP , the last for the , which is now heading towards retirement, probably next year.

If you were around when MS unleashed SP2 you are forgiven for a brief shudder of trepidation, but I think this one should go quite smoothly. Unlike XP SP2, which re-wrote a lot of the ’s code, this one focuses on rolling up all previous updates since the release of SP2, and a reported 1074 fixes and upgrades. Most of them are anonymous behind the scenes things that you’ll be happier not knowing about (because they are mostly deathly dull…), but there are a few interesting bits and bobs. One of them is a new Product Activation module, which allows users to XP without having to enter an , better with Server 2008 and there’s a promise of improved with . XP SP3 will be on your auto update list in the next few days or weeks but if you just can’t wait you can jump the queue and it from Microsoft Update. Be warned, it’s a bit of a whopper at 428Mb, you need to have installed SP1 or SP2 before you can SP3, and this is for the 32-bit version of XP only.

SP3 Automatic Distribution for Office 2003

The end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008 have been a veritable Service Pack fiesta for in terms of the company’s flagship products. Both and have got their fair share of updates, but the productivity suite of both the 2003 and 2007 versions has simply beaten the client to the punch, so to speak. made available both 2003 SP3 and 2007 SP1 ahead of Vista SP1 and XP SP3. In fact, the third service pack for 2003 dropped as early as September 2007.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate build is live. Microsoft is hammering away at the third and final service pack for Windows XP, and is making consistent headway in the matter. Truth be told, since the 2004 availability of XP SP2, and after the numerous delays of SP3 across 2006 and 2007, Service Pack 3 is long overdue. But at the same time, the refresh is getting closer and closer at a fast pace. Microsoft has in fact synchronized the development milestones of Windows Server 2008, formerly codenamed Longhorn, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows XP SP3.

The third service pack for XP was initially introduced as a Beta preview version concomitantly with Windows Vista SP1 pre-Beta in mid July 2007. Ever since that point, Vista SP1 and XP SP3 have been joined at the hip. In this regard, Vista SP1 moved into Beta stage at the end of September 2007, with XP SP3 Beta following closely behind in early October. Last week, Microsoft opened up the test driving process of Vista SP1 with a preview of the first Release Candidate to the service pack shipping to approximately 15,000 testers. (more…)

Download Latest Build of Vista SP1 Beta from Microsoft

Currently, Microsoft has opened up the beta testing process of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta to over 12,000 testers, also involved in trying the development milestones of Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Server 2008. But a little hack is all that it takes to change this, and expand the test driving to all Vista users. In the last week of September, the Redmond company made available the first beta for Vista SP1 taking the operating system out of beta preview stage. By mid October, a registry hack was in place designed to permit users to
access and download Vista SP1 Beta Build 6001.16659 straight from Microsoft, via Windows Update. (more…)
