Firefox 3 - Have you made the switch?

Its been several months now I have used Firefox 3 Beta on Ubuntu 8.04. On my windows PC I have Firefox 2.x.

With the latest version now being official I installed Firefox 3 in windows along side version 2.x just incase.

In other words, I choose the custom install option when installing Firefox 3 and installed it into a separate directory on my Windows PC so that it would not overwrite version 2.x . That way I could compare side by side the results , differences and speed. My main concern are the security vulnerabilities and the consumption of memory that Firefox has. Other than that everything else about Firefox is superior to other browsers I have tried in the past.

Below is a walkthrough reviewing my first experience with Firefox 3 Final release.

This is an unbiased look at Firefox, although I must say overall Firefox still is my browser of choice.

Microsoft Security Advisory: Blended threat from combined attack using Apple’s Safari on the Windows platform

If you have any Apple software installed, their updater may have prompted you to install Safari. Now, Safari has a security hole that can be triggered by visiting the wrong web page, and Apple has no plans to fix it.

Give Firefox an Adrenalin Shot with Preloader

may be my of choice but there are times when it is REALLY slow, so slow in fact that I am sorely tempted to defect to Opera or even gasp Safari!

It’s sometimes even worse when you’re opening up . You click on that little Fox icon and it sits there thinking “hmmm….he wants me to up…will I or won’t I? Let’s think about it for a few minutes”. Meanwhile you’re sitting there gnashing your teeth and flirting with the idea of walking on the wild side with Flock.

But you don’t have to wail and despair any more! During a little stroll through SourceForge, I found an interesting program called Firefox Preloader which was short on technical details but long on prospects. It claims to be able to “improve ’s -up time”. (more…)

Firefox and Internet Explorer Browser Smackdown

The face-off between the most prominent browsers on the market is not only a question of audience and uptake, but also one of security. As browsers are often a preferred attack vector, developers aim to bulletproof the product as much as possible. As far as the browser market is concerned, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Opera pretty much dive the users, with IE having the dominant position, as a result of the Windows-near monopoly, but with Mozilla’s open source product coming hard from behind. Safari is Apple’s proprietary browser and a component of the Mac OS X operating system, also made available for the 32-bit and 64-bit Windows XP and Windows Vista platforms in 2006. Out of all, Opera is the undisputed underdog, having the smallest reach. But in terms of the amount of security vulnerabilities, each browser brings to the table, exposing users to inherent risks, Secunia revealed an entirely different top. (more…)

How to using tabbed bookmarks in Safari and Firefox

A friend of mine was commenting today on a common scenario that a lot of us run into. When you’re actively working on a project, you often times have several tabs open in your browser solely related to that work: some API documentation, a couple versions of a site you are working on, a google spreadsheet, a project resource/status page, and things of that sort.

When you change gears to work on something else, you might have another entirely different set of pages that you keep open all the time. If you juggle several projects at the same time, it can be a nuisance (not to mention a waste of time) to constantly be closing and opening all those windows throughout the day. (more…)
