Top Free and Open Source Apps for Mac Users

A couple of days ago, I met an old friend of mine who just got his hands on a brand new and, after about half an hour of showing the ins and outs of the machine, he asked me why the community has so few . If he had known that I would start writing down every piece of free and/or capable of running on a and keep talking about them for a whole hour, I think he wouldn’t have asked me that question in a million years.

To be fair, I kind of slowed down about 30 minutes after I started writing the list but still got pretty far to cover two pages. Those were the apps that I could remember at the moment, while still trying to write down other apps in no particular order.

The exact same question seems to haunt a lot of out there and thus, I decided to put up a list of the most important I would install on my own after performing a clean install.

Because I do want to give the list some type of order, I have put the apps in six categories, again, in no particular order: , , audio/video, graphics, , editors and miscellaneous. The content in the first five categories is pretty obvious. In the sixth, I have included the that wouldn’t fit in any of the first categories.

In this class of apps, one would expect to find browsers, p2p clients, chat clients and other of this sort. And this is what you’ll get.

Firefox - The first in the list and probably one of most important of the whole article is a fast that has as main features an extreme customizing ability through extensions and blazing fast webpage load times.

Adium – A free instant messaging app which features for most of the IM services out there.

Colloquy – A free IRC client with a -like interface that will surely satisfy even the exquisite tastes of the hardcore fan boys.

FileZilla – My client of choice when working on mainly because of its highly intuitive double-panned interface. The other client that most users have a sweet spot for is Cyberduck (http://.softpedia.com/get/-Utilities/Cyberduck.shtml), an app that will integrate seamlessly with editors like BBEdit, SubEthaEdit and TextMate and will offer for , /TLS and SFTP transfers.

Transmission – Although it doesn’t nee any presentation for users, I will do the honors for all you and show you a free bittorrent client that you will fall in love with after you first get the chance to use it.

Vienna – From my point of view, THE free feed reader for , Vienna, is a very easy to use even for the users that first got their hands on a .

Here you will get to know the free apps that will allow you to remote control a , protect your identity on the , scan for wireless networks, scan your for suspicious packets and broadcast your podcasts.

Chicken of the VNC – Lightweight VNC client that will help you remote control other computers.

HenWen package that will allow you to easily setup and configure Snort to be able to scan your for suspicious traffic.

Juice – Media aggregator that will help you easily any podcast you want to your and/or portable devices.

KisMAC – Easy to use wireless scanner that comes with for 802.11b/g; it is AppleScript-able.

Vidalia – Cross-platform interface for Tor that will help you stay anonymous while browsing the . Vidalia is compatible with any that will allow you to modify its settings and will also allow you to quickly setup a Tor server on your so that you can contribute to the Tor .

As its name says, this category contains the apps that you need to access, store and edit your files, namely audio and video players, burners, audio and video editors, etc.

VLC – My player of choice on the platform because of its high versatility and streaming capabilities.

Cog – Not a lot of people know about it but it is a great app nonetheless. Cog comes with for a lot of audio formats and has a very simple and intuitive interface.

MPlayer OS X – Cross-platform video player that boasts for any video format you may think of, not to mention the huge number of output drivers, its OSD, and the 12 subtitle formats it recognizes.

Miro – Another cross-platform app that will allow you to easily and watch TV shows from the .

Audacity – An extraordinary audio editor that will also help you record, play, import and export audio files at your will.

HandBrake – An DVD to MPEG4 ripper and and the DVD ripping tool of choice for a lot of users.

Burn It Down that will allow you to quickly and easily burn the most common types of disks.

GRAPHICS

Here, you get your hands on image editing, vector graphics, desktop publishing, 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, or interactive creation .

Gimp – My free image editor of choice when working on my and most probably for many other heads.

Scribus desktop publishing tool that brings professional page layout to your .

Inkscape SVG based drawing that has similar capabilities with Illustrator, FreeHand and CorelDraw.

Blender – Last but not least, Blender is the Swiss Army Knife of any modeler or animator. Blender comes with 3D modeling, animation, interactive creation, rendering, post-production, and playback .

First person shooters, race , or any other kind, this is the category where you’ll find them all. Although the list could have been a lot longer, I decided to only write down my personal favorites.

Nexuiz – Another personal favorite, Nexuiz is a cross-platform 3D FPS that brings the death-match style multiplayer to the basics and sporting fast paced action.

OpenArena Quake III clone that will allow you to play online and with bots.

SuperTuxKart – 3D kart racing game, that focuses on fun and not on realistic racing .

X-Moto – A free 2D motocross game that will require you to control a bike inside a world that sports real .

Armagetron Advanced – Ride your motorcycle inside a 3D environment while trying to crash your enemies into a wall.

EDITORS

From WriteRoom to , from the simplest to the most complex, this category features the tools that will help you write down the reports on your work at the end of the day.

OpenOffice – The infamous alternative to ’s and is also available on the platform.

NeoOffice – A suite of applications that features word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and drawing , all ready to be used for free whenever you need them.

Smultron – My favorite free text editor for , an editor that comes with easy selection of open documents, line numbers, for syntax coloring for many different languages, for text encoding, code snippets, status bar, HTML preview, multi- find and replace with regular expressions, possibility to show invisible characters, authenticated saves, toolbar, -line , synchronization of preferences and many others.

Bean – A lightweight word processor that features a very simple interface. This makes it the text editor of choice for many heads and most probably the one that will get adopted by a lot of users that are fed up with the cluttered interface sported by ’s Word.

JDarkRoom – A text editor with a black clean interface, without shortcuts or menu bars that will allow you to focus strictly on your writing.

Nvu WYSIWYG editor for HTML code licensed under the Public License. Nvu is so easy to use that even beginners can create a page or manage a website.

Aching to Get that Dual Processor Chip

If you have been using an old but reliable Pentium IV chip for the past 5 years, chances are you may be fine with it. But you cannot discount the fact that sometimes you want to know the difference when it comes to performance of using a dual processor chip, most of which is available in the market today.

But the problem is financing it. No thanks to the rising costs and the lack of funds, all you can do is read on reviews and try to earn as much as possible. You will get there but if you think of it, would there be something new in the market once you get to finally buy it?

It thus lies on a choice between gambling and identifying why you would want a new processor chip in hand. For most, it comes with work and practicality to be able to use advanced software and tasks that your computer is being used for. Remember that the system requirements of most software today are growing and unless you are able to shift and upgrade to higher PC requirements, you may find yourself trying to make do with your current setup and live with the level of competency you can do while you are saving up for a new CPU at the most.

For sure that dream dual processor is within reach. It’s just timing and knowing when you can be able to finally purchase it. Who knows if by tomorrow you can get one? Anything is possible. It is the waiting that really sucks.

Resolution Requirements: Do You Notice it at All?

For video cards, gone are the usual 32 and 64 MB cards. The lowest you will find in the market today are the 128 MB video cards. Today’s video card manufacturers such as NVIDIA know for a fact that the wise computer geek would focus a lot on the video cards to satisfy requirements for certain applications and games that most PC users are sure to be installing. But the thing is, do you notice the difference at all?

Computers are normally made for browsing the web, playing games, music listening and spreadsheet creation. Multimedia entertainment is the latest craze but seriously, would you often watch movies and film clips on your computer? Perhaps if you don’t have a Television or a trusty DVD player it may be possible. But normally you would only use a computer for administrative tasks.

So when you install these high-end video cards, would you notice it at all? Or would it be all a psychological aspect of appreciating a higher capacity video card?

The resolution and bit rate can be seen when you play high-resolution games such as Warcraft or other new games in the market. But as far as watching videos, the best recourse is to still watch them through actual TV sets. With that said, why are people inclined to watch via their computer?

TV options are only bonuses but should not be a regular requirement for PC options. Video cards come in higher specs these days but sometimes you have to wonder what a 1 Gigabyte video card would have over actual television.

Know the limits of your PC. You can watch TV programs on your computer but don’t expect it to be better than modern television. Video cards are aimed at graphics and games. But as far as resolution is concerned, take note of the difference. It may not matter at all.

Being a Step Ahead of the Software Requirements

For most software that you install, there will be the ideal PC requirements provided so you can be assured of optimum performance for programs and games you will install on your PC. At times, varied differences as far as video specifications, memory and processor capacity will be stated. But while many would see the usual minimal requirements, you have to consider the fact on whether these will be sufficient to satisfy the level of performance you are expecting once these software programs are installed.

Based on experience, it would never hurt to be a step ahead. This entails making sure that you are installing the software on hardware that is a bit advanced. For example, if video card requirements are at least 128 MB, why not install a 256 MB video card if the difference is just a couple of bucks? Or perhaps if memory requires at least 256 RAM, why not go double like 512?

Some may call it overkill but they are really some form of making sure that you get best performance from these programs. Remember that if you go for minimal requirements, you will eventually find yourself wanting better performance and hence upgrading these concerned hardware peripherals in the end.

In summary, do not take the minimal system requirements as a measure of competent utilization of programs. They are placed there so that you know that the program will indeed run. But as far as great performance is concerned, do consider the fact that it is not stated anywhere in that part of the software box for you to ponder on as well.
