Two security bulletins, from December 2007 and from June 2008 respectively, affecting the DirectX components of a wide range of Windows operating systems including Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Service Pack 3, have been updated. According to Microsoft, the modifications were designed to simply add DirectX 9.0a on the list of impacted DirectX versions. The pair of patches are set up to resolve no less than four security vulnerabilities and both security bulletins are labeled with the maximum severity rating from Microsoft: Critical.
Released initially on December 11, 2007,
Security Bulletin MS07-064 plugs security holes in DirectX 7.0, 8.1, 9.0 and 10.0 running on Windows 2000, Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista RTM. One of the security issues is related to a DirectX Code Execution Vulnerability Parsing SAMI Files while the remaining one deals with a DirectX Code Execution Vulnerability Parsing WAV and AVI Files.
"This critical security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft DirectX. These vulnerabilities could allow code execution if a user opened a specially crafted file used for streaming media in DirectX. If a user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights," Microsoft informed.
As far as
Security Bulletin MS08-033 is concerned, Microsoft also patched vulnerabilities in all the DirectX and Windows versions mentioned above, but also in XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Server 2008. The company resolved a MJPEG Decoder Vulnerability and a Format Parsing Vulnerability. "This security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft DirectX that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted media file," the Redmond giant stated.

The third and last service pack for the 32-bit version of Windows XP has debuted on the path to automatic distribution today, July 10, 2008. Initially, Microsoft was shy about pinpointing the actual deadline for XP SP3's availability through Automatic Updates, and only referenced an abstract "early summer" in order to give users a clue as to when they should get ready.
Windows XP SP3 was released to manufacturing on April 21, 2008. But just as it was the case with Windows Vista Service Pack 1, Microsoft delayed the availability of the gold bits for over a week, especially when incompatibility problems regarding Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) were involved.
At the beginning of May 2008,
XP SP3 RTM went live on Windows Update and on the Microsoft Download Center. Now, over two months later, Microsoft is releasing the service pack through AU. This means that XP users that haven't implemented the service pack as of yet, and with the AU settings configured to "automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them" will receive the final bits of SP3 without lifting a finger.
Still, the Redmond giant informed that not all XP users will be able to see the final version of XP SP3 through AU on June 10. According to Microsoft SP3 distribution through AU will take some time, as the rollout will be performed in stages. The Microsoft Service Pack blocker toolkit is available to block the delivery of SP3 for users with AU enabled that want to postpone the deployment of the service pack.

A reliability and performance update KB952709 is available for download for Windows Vista Service Pack 1. This specific release targets all Windows Vista editions, provided that they have the first service pack integrated.
Two updates are up for grabs for both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vista SP1. "This update resolves issues that may affect some Windows Vista SP1-based computers. These issues have been reported by customers who use the Error Reporting service or Microsoft Customer Support Services," Microsoft informed.
According to Microsoft, "this update includes the following improvements on a Windows Vista SP1-based computer:
• This update improves the stability of Windows Vista SP1-based computers by addressing some crashes that may occur when you try to check e-mail by using a POP3 e-mail client such as Windows Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird. The crashes may occur on a Windows Vista SP1-based computer in the following scenario incoming POP3 and outgoing SMTP traffic monitoring is enabled.
• Both a third-party antivirus application and an antispyware application are installed, such as the following applications: ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite by Check Point Software Technologies and SpySweeper by Webroot Software.
• This update improves the reliability of the Windows Vista SP1 based-computers by addressing some problems that occur when you delete user accounts by using the User Accounts item in Control Panel. When this problem occurs, the system may stop responding (hang).
• This update improves the reliability of Windows Vista SP1-based computers that experience issues in which large applications cannot run after the computer is turned on for extended periods of time. For example, when you try to start Excel 2007 after the computer is turned on for extended periods of time, a user may receive an error message that resembles the following: EXCEL.EXE is not a valid Win32 application
• This update improves the reliability of Windows Vista SP1-based computers by reducing the number of crashes that may be caused by the Apple QuickTime thumbnail preview in Windows Live Photo Gallery.
• This update improves the performance of Windows Vista SP1-based computers by reducing audio and video (AV) stuttering. Such AV stuttering may occur when the audio or video component is streaming high definition content from a Windows Vista SP1-based computer that has a NVIDIA network adapter nForce driver version 67.5.4.0 that is installed to a Windows Media Center Extender device."

In the fall of 2007, the Redmond company issued two Vista compatibility, performance and reliability update packs that were essentially bits of the first service pack, but offered to Vista RTM users almost half a year ahead of SP1 via Windows Update. Following the availability of SP1, Microsoft informed that there are users who cannot implement the service pack due to a variety of issues, but mainly incompatibility problems. For them, the
KB938979 and KB938194 update packages were reissued. Users of Windows Vista SP1 need neither of the packs.
According to Microsoft,
KB938194 will resolve the following problems:
"The screen may go blank when you try to upgrade the video driver.
• The computer stops responding, and you receive a "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error message.
• The computer stops responding or restarts unexpectedly when you play video games or perform desktop operations.
• The Diagnostic Policy Service (DPS) stops responding when the computer is under heavy load or when very little memory is available. This problem prevents diagnostics from working.
• The screen goes blank after an external display device that is connected to the computer is turned off.
• There are stability issues with some graphics processing units (GPUs). These issues could cause GPUs to stop responding (hang).
• Visual appearance issues occur when you play graphics-intensive games.
• You experience poor playback quality when you play HD DVD disks or Blu-ray disks on a large monitor.
• Applications that load the Netcfgx.dll component exit unexpectedly.
• Windows Calendar exits unexpectedly after you create a new appointment, create a new task, and then restart the computer.
• Internet Connection Sharing stops responding after you upgrade a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP to Windows Vista and then restart the computer.
• The Printer Spooler service stops unexpectedly.
• You receive a "Stop 0x0000009F" error when you put the computer to sleep while a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection is active."
