The 64-bit edition of Windows Vista delivers not only support for larger quantities of system memory, with the high-end editions supporting as much as 128 GB of RAM, but also some extra horse power hidden under the hood.

Essentially, in terms of performance, x64 Vista manages to best all the alternatives available under the Windows client umbrella. However, it's not the x64 Vista with Service Pack 1, as you would expect, but the plain vanilla RTM version of the latest Windows client we're talking about. In a benchmark performed using PassMark PerformanceTest 6.1, the RTM version of 64-bit Vista came out on top of all 32-bit and 64-bit Windows clients starting with the original version of Windows XP.

According to Hardware 2.0, x64 Vista RTM has outrun x64 Vista SP1 with a score of 1183.1 compared to just 1128.8. The platform used for testing featured a Phenom 9700 quad-core processor, an ATi Radeon 3850 256MB RAM, an ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe, 2GB (2 x 1GB) RAM, and a Western Digital Raptor HDD 10,000RPM 150GB as well as a Western Digital Caviar HDD 7,200RPM 500GB. On this system, the original 64-bit Vista version bested the SP1 release.

In this context, both 64-bit variants of Vista (with and without SP1) outperformed the 32-bit versions, also RTM and SP1. x86 Vista RTM even scored higher than x86 Vista SP1 with a rating of 1002.4 compared with just 972.3 of the operating system plus the service pack. But, at the same time, both XP RTM and XP SP3 scored higher than 32-bit Vista SP1. XP RTM pulled off a score of 1001.4, while XP SP3 with 990.8 bested not only x86 Vista SP1 but also XP SP2 with just 891, the lowest score of the benchmark. Still, the obvious conclusion of the tests is that while 64-bit Vista editions run faster than any other Windows client, the differences between the 32-bit variants of the operating systems are only superficial, and won't be felt in a real life scenario.

Via [Keznews]

It has been almost a month since we released Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update in 5 languages. To date: millions of people have successfully installed Windows Vista SP1 on their PCs. So we're happy to announce the next step for Windows Vista SP1 availability. We are excited to report that today we are making Windows Vista SP1 available to folks running Windows Vista in any of the supported languages. Starting today, users will be able to choose to manually install Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update or download the standalone installer from the Microsoft Download Center (x86 and x64) for any of the 36 supported languages, not just English, Spanish, German, French, and Japanese. For now, it is available for users who visit Windows Update or the Microsoft Download Center. We encourage most users to get Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update-which will provide the best update experience.
Now, Windows Vista PCs of any supported language can update to SP1. You may be aware we also make DVD images of Windows Vista with SP1 available to certain groups like TechNet Plus subscribers, MSDN subscribers, and Volume License (VL) customers. TechNet Plus and MSDN subscribers can download these DVD images in some languages today. The remaining languages will be made available in 2 additional groups over the next few weeks.

Via [Windows Vista Blog]

Adobe’s flagship product, Photoshop, will become a 64-bit application in the next major revision to the company’s bundle of creative pro applications, Creative Suite 4. However, the 64-bit version will only be available to Windows users because of a change Apple made at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2007.

The good news is that Adobe will make a 64-bit version for the Mac in the future.

“We can reassure people that literally from the day we found out Carbon 64-bit was cancelled, we have been figuring out what we need to do to get there,” John Nack, senior product manager for Adobe Photoshop, told Macworld.

At WWDC 2007 Apple discontinued its Carbon 64-bit program, which left company’s like Adobe without an avenue to make its current codebase 64-bit. What Adobe has to do now is transition all of the old Photoshop code to Apple’s native Cocoa programming language, where it can then be made 64-bit.

“If you want to go 64-bit on the Mac, you have to port to Cocoa and that’s not a trivial task,” said Nack.

Adobe said that they have been working on the Carbon 64-bit version of Photoshop for some time and had planned on releasing a version for Creative Suite 4 (CS4). However, with the changes at WWDC 2007, that is not going to happen.

“Our feeling has been to deliver 64-bit on both platforms for this release,” said Nack. “We could hold back the Windows 64-bit version until we could catch up on the Mac, but that didn’t seem fair to those customers.”

If one good thing can come out of the delay, Nack says Adobe will gain valuable experience in writing 64-bit applications, albeit for Windows.

This guide which I found at Digital Inspiration illustrates the various steps required to integrate Service Pack 1 files into Windows Vista installer via a process commonly known as slipstreaming.

Before we get started, here are four things you need to slipstream Windows Vista and Service Pack 1 files:
a. Windows Vista Installer DVD and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Installer
b. vLite Installer - vLite 1.1.5 Beta
c. A blank DVD disc for writing the Vista SP1 files and few gigs of free hard disk space.

Now that you have all the ingredients ready, let’s get slipstreaming Vista SP1:

1. Insert the original Windows Vista DVD disk and start vLite (install the program if you haven’t done that already).

2. Browse for the folder that contains your Windows Vista files (i.e., your DVD Drive letter). vLite will now copy all the files to some local folder that is specified by you.
Intrested...? Digital Inspiration
