Problem:
When you check for updates on Windows Update or on Automatic Updates, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not offered for download.
Reasons:
This problem can occur for many different reasons. However, the following reasons are the most common:
- You already have Windows Vista SP1 installed and do not realize it.
- You must install another update before you can install Windows Vista SP1.
- System components that are required to install Windows Vista SP1 are not present on your computer.
- You installed a prerelease version of Windows Vista SP1, and it was not properly uninstalled before you tried to install the final release of the service pack.
- You use a certain version of the following software or hardware:
- Symantec software driver for Symantec Endpoint Protection and for Symantec Network Access Control clients
- Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo LA Notebook
- Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) Store Operations or Headquarters
- vLite
The MOST common problem is the sound card driver from realtek
update that driver and see if you can get the SP1 from windows update

follow the following steps:
1) From the Bios (From default settings):
- Power -> APM -> Power On by PCI Devices = Enabled
2) From Vista > Control Panel (switch to classic mode from link on the left pane)-> Device Manager
Right click on the atheros network adaptor (I have the latest drivers for my network adaptor from the asus site). Then follow the red arrows.
EDIT:
After doing the above I noticed that the pc would wake up on its own.
So I went again in the device manager and changed the settings as you can see in the image below:
Thats it! Now WOL is enabled

HOW-TO: Enable SATA drives AFTER vista has installed in IDE compatibility mode!
Or HOWTO: enable AHCI mode after installing Windows
Consider the following scenario. In the BIOS setup of a Microsoft Windows Vista-based computer, you change the Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) mode of the boot drive to use the Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) specification. You then restart the computer. In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
This issue occurs if the AHCI driver (Msahci.sys) in Windows Vista is disabled or not installed the first time you installed Vista. This driver must be enabled before you change the SATA mode of the boot drive.
Solution
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
To resolve this issue, enable the AHCI driver in the registry before you change the SATA mode of the boot drive. To do this, follow these steps:
- Exit all Windows-based programs.
- Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
- If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci
- In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
- On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.
download the above registry file below:
