Officially, Windows XP Service Pack 3 RTM is not yet available for download. Unofficially however, the story is a tad different. The third and last service pack for Windows XP has been up for grabs from various sources, more or less legitimate since a few days. And now the final bits of XP SP3 can be accessed straight from Microsoft, even though the Redmond company has failed to jump the gun on the previously announced general availability date: April 29, 2008. But failed only in appearance, as Microsoft has been serving the gold version of XP SP3 through its Windows Update infrastructure since the debut of this week.
The fact is that the Redmond company has debuted the preparations for the general release of Windows XP SP3 scheduled for April 29. In this context, the final bits of the service pack have begun making their way on the WU servers and propagating slowly. At the same time, just because Windows XP SP3 RTM is there, it doesn’t mean that the bits are visible to end users. Still, the official availability is but hours away. And just in case your patience has run out, and you want to grab the service pack straight from Microsoft ahead of GA, know that Windows XP SP3 RTM build 5512 (English version) can be downloaded via this link.
Windows XP SP3 was released to manufacturing on April 21, and was initially shipped just to OEM partners. Microsoft subsequently wanted to focus on the delivery of the service pack through Windows Update and the Download Center. In fact, MSDN TechNet subscribers and beta testers were to be ignored according to the original plans, from which Microsoft diverged as of April 23. But with XP SP3 dropped via MSDN and TechNet, the bits were also leaked to torrent and warez websites.
Windows XP Service Pack 3 FINAL is also available for download here.

I’ve given away some mousepads, headwear, reading material and a couple of software licenses before but I think this might top all of that in terms of size, weight, usefulness and most importantly, value.
Some of you might remember the HP Pavilion HDX 9000 “Dragon” Entertainment Notebook (possibly inspired by War and Peace) computer I reviewed last September, well there’s no better way to put it except HP is giving 31 (thirty-one) of them away. This site will be giving away one of them.
If the sheer number of them isn’t existing enough, the upgraded model they’re giving away is actually not even on the market yet. The specifications include:
- Operating system: Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit)
- Processor: Intel Core2 Extreme Processor X9000 (2.80GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
- Display: 20.1″ diagonal WUXGA High-Definition HP Ultra Brightview Widescreen (1920×1200)
- Memory: 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
- Graphics Card: 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS
- Personalization: HP Imprint Finish (Dragon) + Fingerprint Reader + Webcam + Microphone
- Networking: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection and Bluetooth(TM)
- Hard Drive: 500GB 5400RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (250GB x 2)
- Optical: Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
- TV & Entertainment Experience: Integrated HP HDTV Hybrid TV Tuner and 4 Altec Lansing speakers + the HP Triple Bass Reflex subwoofer
- Primary Battery: 9 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
But the excitement (for you) doesn’t stop there. The good people at HP and BuzzCorps also thought of what the winners might want to do with their new portable powerhouse - perhaps edit some pictures and videos, play a few games or watch some movies - and that’s the reason why they’re also throwing in:
The competition works like this. The 31 machines are distributed amongst 31 technology blogs - some you probably read already and some you might not have heard of. Each blog will draw a winner on each day starting from May 9 to June 8. How each blog will pick a winner is unique but they will only accept entries starting from 7 days before the draw. Going to each blog to submit an entry is allowed and encouraged.
The schedule is as follows:
Remember to check out those sites at least 7 days before the giveaway draw date to find out how to enter. As for this site, how I’ll be doing the competition is still undecided. Keep a watchful eye.

Microsoft is hard at work searching for ways to improve its Office System. This is why the company has introduced a quasi-independent effort dubbed Office Labs. Designed to be a sandbox set up to streamline the experimenting, building and testing of new ideas, Microsoft Office Labs will offer the first taste of new products and features while still in the most early stages of development, even as prototypes. An illustrative example in this regard is Search Commands for the Office 2007 System.
“Search Commands helps you find commands, options, wizards, and galleries in Microsoft Office 2007 Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Just type what you’re looking for in your own words and click the command you need. Search Commands also includes Guided Help, which acts as a tour guide for specific tasks,” reveals the product’s description.
But in the end, as Chris Pratley - Lead Program Manager, Microsoft Office explained, Microsoft Office Labs is an incubation effort that places what are essentially internal ideas, products and features into the public eye. The initiative is of course focused not only on exploring new technology, but also on gathering feedback from end users. However, Pratley stressed the fact that all the items featured on Microsoft Office Labs are no more than in an experimental phase, and that is why they are not delivered via the Redmond company’s traditional download hotspots. What it all comes down to is that the prototypes and ideas featured via Microsoft Office Labs might become full blown products, might even be integrated into the company’s solutions or could just be killed in their embryonic stage.
“Concept testing is what this site is all about. The projects you find here are not products or beta versions. They don’t even pretend to be complete product ideas. They are the equivalent of ‘concept cars’ for software. Automotive companies sometimes produce near and far-future test vehicles to test design concepts or features to see how effective they are. In most cases there is no intent to productize the vehicles as shown. They simply work for the purposes of getting feedback. We do the same for software. The difference is that you to get to test drive the concepts. Because of that, all these experiences are strictly ‘use at your own risk’, and we can’t promise to fix every bug that is reported but we’ll try to nip the worst ones,” Pratley explained.

In the TalkBack section on my post looking at SP3 benchmarks, _deitrich asked a really good question: Adrian, how about a comparison of XP SP3 vs Vista SP1? Oui? C’est possible?
Good question! Fortunately I’ve already done a fair bit of the groundwork in that I used the Phenom 9700 system I have for benchmarking both XP SP3 and Vista SP1.
I benchmarked both operating systems using PassMark PerformanceTest 6.1 and bringing together the results from both tests allows me to answer _deitrich’s question.
Note: The hardware configuration of the Phenom 9700 remained unchanged between the two tests and similar optimizations steps were carried out for each OS.
