I was trying to make the vmware virtual appliance ubuntu 8.04 mouse scroll wheel to work, and I found the solution here. It worked great.

I was having problems installing VMware Tools on Ubuntu Hardy (8.04) under VMware Fusion but got to the bottom of it.
The next problem was trying to get the mouse scroll wheel to work. I did some Googling and most of the guides suggested I change a single line in xorg.conf (namely, set the “Protocol” of the mouse device to “ImPS/2″). It didn’t work. On a limb I thought I’d try changing the driver from “vmmouse” to “mouse” and this solved the problem, but the mouse tracking and acceleration was TOTALLY different between OS X and Linux.. eugh!
With some perseverance, I’ve found a solution. You can use the vmmouse driver, keep the synchronized mouse tracking and acceleration, and use your mouse wheel as it was intended.
I have been told this technique works on VMware Workstation and VMware Player on the PC too, but I haven’t tried it on there myself.
Steps to Enable Mouse Wheel Scrolling in Ubuntu Hardy under VMware Fusion
Launch a Terminal (Applications menu -> Accessories -> Terminal).
Type:
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Scroll down (it’s not far, perhaps 20 - 30 lines) till you see a block that looks like this:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "vmmouse"
[.. blah blah blah ..]
EndSection
Replace that whole section with this:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "vmmouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
Save the file, then close all your apps and hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace. X restarts within a few seconds, and you’re back up and running. Scrolling should now be possible!
I haven’t gotten to the bottom of horizontal scrolling yet. I thought a ZAxisMapping of “4 5 11 12″ would do it, but I suspect either VMware Fusion’s mouse driver does things a different way, or maybe it’s mouse specific (not likely). I’ll update this post if I work it out.

If you live outside of the United States and have just received a Live Mesh invite, your excitement may have been watered by those little words telling you you cannot install the Live Mesh desktop client onto your computer because it is not using US-English.
Well, that’s actually not as much as a show-stopper as some of you may think. It involves a simple little configuration change and a restart and you’ll be right back on track.
Step 1: Open the “Regional and Language Options” dialog. Type “Regional” into the Start menu and you should find it.
Step 2: Click on the “Administrative” tab.
Step 3: Click “Change system locale” and confirm the UAC dialog.
Step 4: In the drop-down list, find “English (United States)”. Click OK and OK again to restart the computer.
Step 5: Install Live Mesh client software.
Step 6: Revert your system locale to your original setting. You can continue to use the Live Mesh software once it has been installed without the locale being “English (United States)”.

You might have heard the buzz about Microsoft’s Live Mesh software-as-a-service platform launched over the past week and wondered what all the fuss is about. Well you probably didn’t get very far before you were stopped in the registration process to find out it was invite-only. Apparently it’s a necessary to help them scale with demand.
Today, LiveSide reported how existing Live Mesh users can invite other users using the folder sharing dialog and thus it’s beginning spread slowly since each person who accepts the invitation also receive a few invitations of their own to give out.
As soon as I got my own invite, I started thinking of the original “Gmail invite sharing” website and began to build one for Live Mesh. Thus, www.sharemesh.com was born. If you would like a Live Mesh invite or have one to share, I encourage you to check it out.
In case you were wondering, this only took me roughly seven hours from to design, develop, test and deploy using PHP and MySQL. I owe most of it to Dreamweaver and Uniform Server.

announced at CES this year. The Origami Experience software is a "pack" of applications designed specifically for the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) running Windows Vista.
The Origami Experience 2.0 software comes with 3 applications that do specific tasks on the UMPC. I'll give a quick overview of these applications in which I'll go into greater detail in my 4 part series of posts about the Origami Experience 2.0.
Origami Central:
Origami Central provides quick access to your Media Library on your UMPC. That means your music, photos and videos. Origami Central lets you play your music, watch your videos and watch photo slideshows. On top of letting you access your media, it also gives you quick access to favorite programs on your UMPC like Microsoft Office OneNote 2007. In the Origami Experience 2.0 - Origami Central comes with a brand new browsing experience. You can now browse the web using Origami Central is full-fidelity web browsing - 100% compatible with IE7. That means you can browse sites that use Flash and other ActiveX controls. It also comes with a RSS feed reader also new to this release.
Origami Now:
Origami Now is a brand new application for the UMPC with the release of Origami Experience 2.0. It is designed to bring you information useful to you very quickly without much interaction. It does this by giving you the ability to customize "tiles". You can navigate between these tiles and their information. What kind of information can be in the tiles? You can configure tiles for weather, email, RSS and more.
Origami Picture Password:
You can use Origami Picture Password to login to your UMPC.
I'm using the Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC to run the Origami Experience 2.0 on (exact model number and specs here). It works wonderfully for me.
