Tweak Ubuntu the old fashioned way. Well if old fashioned is using a GUI interface (like TweakUI for Windows) instead of command line tweak, then this is it!
I got the latest release of
Ubuntu Tweak v0.2.6 and tried it out. It allows beginner users of Ubuntu who aren't familiar with tweaking manually in a terminal window and are worried they might mess something up. Its easy to make changes to their system with this tool. You can do Compiz 0.6.2 tweaking, update your startup preferences, and even make some security changes like locking down your gnome panel and printing.

Features of Ubuntu Tweak:
- View of Basic System Information(Distribution, Kernel, CPU, Memory, etc.)
- GNOME Session Control
- Auto Start Program Control
- Show/Hide and Change Splash screen
- Show/Hide desktop icons or Mounted Volumes
- Show/Hide/Rename Computer, Home, Trash icon or Network icon
- Tweak Metacity Window Manager’s Style and Behavior
- Compiz Fusion 0.6.2 settings, Screen Edge Settings, Window Effects Settings, Menu Effect Settins
- GNOME Panel Settings
- Nautilus Settings
- Advanced Power Management Settings
- System Security Settings
Installation Steps for Ubuntu Feisty/Gutsy/Hardy:
Open a terminal window, type the command to run geditand modify the sources.list: sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
And put the following two sources in it:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ubuntu gutsy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ubuntu gutsy main
Then update the sources and install or upgrade Ubuntu Tweak:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
Once you have it installed you can upgrade it by running:
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Ed does an excellent job pointing out how Vista’s current criticism isn’t anything new. The same people that now criticize Vista, did the same to XP when it was released. Funny how that unworthy XP has become “God’s Gift” now.

It’s not very often you find a job advertisement which doesn’t tantalize your curiosity, so it’s only to fair to take the following with a grain of salt. This Microsoft job posting for a “user experience designer” was published on the 23rd of February 2008.
The focus of the job description refers to a startup project inside Microsoft called Tangram. What they aim to achieve with the technology is intriguing at the least.
The Tangram team provides an opportunity to work on the engineering challenges of an Internet scale services technology coupled with 3D interactive experiences that have finally become possible due to ultrahigh resolution screens and high performance processors. We are changing what people expect from the Internet by delivering entirely new ways to see, interact with and use data of deep interest to consumers and business people. This is a project with high visibility in Microsoft. We are assembling a team of world class engineers with very strong analytical and technical skills. We are looking for people who can define the problem, come up with a solution, and implement it. End to end. Ship it in 6 months.
Tangram is a startup product team with the highest levels of visibility.
We aim to ship our alpha service and tool this year, and ship a revenue producing V1 in 2009, within a major Microsoft go to market. Tangram has the opportunity to change what people expect from the Internet by delivering entirely new ways to see, interact with and use data of deep interest to consumers and business people.
We are looking for a Senior user experience designer who has a burning passion for quality and simplicity. This is an opportunity to exploit ultrahigh resolution displays, interactive 3D, photorealism and immersion, and reset what people expect from the Internet.
By no means a coincidence, a “Tangram” is actually an ancient Chinese puzzle game composed of 7 pieces of shaped objects called “tans” - including several triangles, a square and a parallelogram. The objective of the puzzle is to arrange the pieces, without overlap, to form an outline of familiar objects. It might sound limited, but the possibilities are in fact endless with the right creative mind.
To add more fuel to the fire, during the Microsoft “Mix n Mash” interview in December 2007, Bill Gates said the following:
Now, certain structured things are still hard to learn, like go to the Web and try and understand foreign aid. Because that’s kind of a numeric thing, the classification of (inaudible) is hard, the Web does not do that well today.
Now, some software breakthroughs in terms of letting you visualize data in rich ways and normalizing it as it comes from different sources, over the next three of four years that will happen.
In fact, most of my day today was in a visualization group where we’re talking about what breakthroughs are needed so that if you want to study a question like that, take economic flows, you want to understand this sub prime thing, you want to see the numbers, okay, what percentage of people bought what type of mortgage over what period of time, when does the interest rate go up, what does this mean, what portion of their income is it. If you really want to understand it more than just trivial text-type articles, there’s nothing out there today that lets you do that.
Coincidence? I think not. All we can do now is to keep an eye out for that alpha hopefully coming sometime this year. Otherwise I’m sure Scoble will let us know in advance, with a few tears for extra impact.

Chris Jackson, a developer and application compatibility expert on the Windows Application Experience SWAT Team, released some info that they gathered relating to UAC. They removed enterprise users, and beta testers from the 9 million user sessions they have data on during the period from October to December in 2007. Previously, 84% of consumers had UAC enabled, but that number has now gone up to 88%. Now this probably isn’t all that amazing of a statistic, what’s maybe more surprising is that 12% have disabled it. What is encouraging is that the percentage that disable it has gone down, but this number may not mean what you think as statistics can be deceiving.
Why would fewer people be disabling UAC? Statistically, I don’t believe fewer people are. What’s likely happened is that earlier adopters of Vista are more computer savvy, and thus are more likely to disable the feature, since they’re more likely to know how, and are more likely to resent the ‘restrictions’ UAC imposes. As time passes, more ‘average’ users start using Vista, and are less likely to disable it either because they don’t see it as a big deal, or they don’t know how. Therefore, the same number, or even slightly more, are disabling UAC, but the pool of average users they are a part of is growing much quicker, so statistically they become a smaller part of the whole.
Chris talks a bit more about his work in trying to reduce repetitive prompts from various applications, which is due mostly to poorly coded apps. He also makes a good case on why UAC is important to have running in the first place, and I would say it’s doubly true with the average consumer PC, which commonly has a non-technical user responsible for maintaining it.

You can select multiple files in Explorer by clicking the first one, then holding down the Ctrl key while clicking additional files. But some people see copies of all the selected files suddenly appear when they do that. Now Sometimes the mouse is to sensitive that why files usually just pop up
Run regedit and navigate to the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
look for the values DragHeight and DragWidth; if it’s not there, create them as REG_SZ type. The default values are 4 pixels; to reduce the sensitivity of your mouse make the values larger, such as 25.
