Microsoft Releases Vista, XP and Longhorn Service Pack Blocker Tool

Microsoft has just posted a Blocker tool on its download site (Dec 6,07) that will block automatic installations of several upcoming service packs, including Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows XP SP3.

The download includes three versions of the tool -- an executable, a script and a group policy template -- that prevents the service packs from reaching PCs via Windows Update, Microsoft's default update service.

The tool blocks Windows Vista SP1, Windows XP SP3 and Windows Server 2003 SP2 for varying lengths of time. Vista SP1 and XP SP3 can be blocked for as long as 12 months after the service packs are released in final form, while the Server 2003 SP2 blocker bars the download only through March 2008.

Microsoft says its "a blocking tool is available for organizations that would like to temporarily prevent installation of Service Pack updates through Windows Update. "

This tool can be used with:

However dont worry this tool lets all other updates, including monthly security patches, pass through Windows Update without modification.

Download the SPBlockerTools.exe directly from Microsoft.

Leave Windows Vista Alone, Chris Crocker!

Chris Pirillo does a good job spoofing that girl crying about people picking on Britney, but he does the same with Vista. Why can’t you all just leave Vista alone?

Google Mobile Updated for RIM Blackberry

Google has released the Google Mobile Updater for the BlackBerry, a small bit of software that keeps an eye on Google applications and helps you install updates to them as necessary.

Google Mobile Updater is a free download, currently only for the RIM BlackBerry users, that lets you install and update Google Mobile services. Google Mobile Updater will keep you notified of new Google Mobile services as well as updates to installed applications. This way, you can be sure to have the most current version of your favorite Google Mobile applications when you are on the go.

To download the apps go to mobile.google.com and click on "Get Google's mobile products in a single download" option.

When you run the updater, it checks against Google's servers to see what the most recent version is. Once it has updated itself, you'll get the option to Install All apps, or install them individually. Most of the "apps" are just shortcuts to open the webpages. Real apps include GMail for Mobile and Google Maps for Mobile. There's also a Google Search app which launches the browser to display the search results.

Also there is a free download that allows BlackBerry users to sync their Google Calendar with their device.

Users can go to m.google.com/sync via their BlackBerry's Web browser to download and install the software. Or they can install it on their PC running the BlackBerry desktop software first, and then install it to the BlackBerry via a USB connection.

Here is a list of Google Mobile Products: Search , Maps , Gmail ,Calendar, Docs , SMS, GOOG-411, News , Photos , Reader , Blogger and Notebook

If you need accessories for your BlackBerry visit amazon.com here for a complete list.

Tutorial on Google’s Web Apps for the iPhone

I found this interesting review of the latest Google Web Tools for the iPhone

What makes it so great is that there is a menu at the top that links to all the other apps. It also seems to pre-cache your other apps so when search it’s searching images in the background and they are ready right away when you tap images. Here’s a list of the apps: Google search, image search, local search, news, Gmail, Calendar, Reader, GOOG-411, SMS, Picasa Photos, Blogger, Notebook.

Users who point their iPhone Safari browser at www.google.com will see a different Google search page. The iPhone version has tabs at the top of the page that offer quick access to Gmail, Google's Calendar and Reader apps and another tab for more services, which include links to docs, Google's free 411 service Goog-411, Blogger and Picasa, Google's photo organizer.

It's a nice touch that puts you right into Google's world without having to bookmark sites. It works by leveraging browser technologies like AJAX, said Google. iPhone can still visit the classic site by clicking on a link on the page. Play the video to get a walk through the new Google tools for the iPhone.

If your looking for additional accessories for your iPhone take a look at this list.

Microsoft’s Ministry of Truth

Steven SinofskyIf you thought the current state of Microsoft’s transparency is deafening, wait till they fill this role.

In this highly strategic role, the Director of Windows Client Disclosure will report to the CVP of Windows Product Management and is responsible for managing the full set of disclosures for the Windows Client Operating System business including defining the roadmap of disclosures, reviewing the core messages and driving buy-in across the organization. …

… The scope of this disclosure is focused on the Windows Operating System products including Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, but includes related products such as the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP), Internet Explorer, and Media Technologies. …

… This includes coordination of messages between Windows Product Management and the Product Marketing and Communications team, the Windows Development Organization (WEX and COSD), the Windows Live Team, and the OEM team.

The Director for Windows Client Disclosure will play a key role in defining the communications agenda while grounding these disclosures in the technical and strategic realities of the Windows Operating System Business. This thought leader will also be responsible for making sure that there are zero surprises in our disclosure plans.

The Director for Windows Client Disclosure will be responsible for creating and communicating disclosure guidelines and processes across the Windows Team including Engineering, Marketing, Product Management, the sales force (working with Product Marketing), and operations.

The Director of Windows Client Disclosure is responsible for creating the roadmap for all disclosures that relate to the Windows Client Business. As a part of this, they are also responsible for making sure that all disclosures that relate to the Windows Client Business are made as part of a thoughtful process that drives clarity of message and orchestrated inclusion of key constituencies and audiences. To do this, the Director of Windows Client Disclosure must develop a process to collect and review all disclosures. …

Instead of just saying it like it is, it’s not hard to believe in the near future every blog post, press release, interview, podcast and video by Microsoft employees or involving them will have to be filtered to ensure it “drives clarity of message and orchestrated inclusion of key constituencies and audiences”.

Come to think of it, the Apple public relations people who took a bullet for Phil Schiller is perfect for the job!

Disk Cleanup Time

After about months of using my laptop with Windows Vista installed, I have accumulated tons of programs, dozens of error dumps, and hundreds of sites cached in my temporary internet folder. I decided to do a Disk Cleanup and my 120 GB HDD was nearing it capacity. after running the Disk Cleanup I managed to free up about 12GB of precious disk space.
So to start with the process we go and click to the Start Orb and type Disk Cleanup. It would prompt on which drive you would want to cleanup so pick the appropriate one, and click ok. Now you can opt to clear all of it and or leave out the offline internet files, so you can still have your bookmarked sites.

And for another tip you can click on the More Options Tab you have an option there to remove so of the programs and features that you don’t need. And also you clear your restore points delete the previous once and leave only the most recent Restore point.

After using the Windows Vista Disk Cleanup wizard  yo may also have to go to your temp folder and delete the rest of it. Type %TEMP% into the start menu search box, and hit enter. You’ll immediate be taken to the temporary files folder, and so you can pick and delete what ever you like.
