Windows 2008 Server Versions Announced

The different versions of Windows 2008 were revealed yesterday by Microsoft. They are very similar to the 2003 server editions.

Here are the details:

Windows Server 2008 is available in eight versions, three of which include *Hyper-V:

•Windows Server 2008 Standard. This version has built-in, enhanced Web and virtualization capabilities, powerful tools that give customers greater control over their servers and streamline configuration and management tasks, and enhanced security features that work to harden the operating system to help protect their data and network and provide a solid, highly-dependable foundation for businesses. With Windows Server 2008 Standard edition, customers get one virtual instance per license.

•Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. It has the same features as Windows Server 2008 Standard, but with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition, customers get four virtual instances per license.

•Windows Server 2008 Datacenter. It delivers an enterprise-class platform for deploying business-critical applications. It helps customers improve availability and security features, and reduce infrastructure costs, by consolidating applications with virtualization licensing rights. And with Windows Server 2008 Datacenter edition, customers receive unlimited virtual instances per license.

Two versions offered without Hyper-V are targeted at specific workloads:

•Windows Web Server 2008. Designed to be used as a single-purpose Web server, Windows Web Server 2008 delivers a rock-solid foundation of Web infrastructure capabilities in the next-generation Windows Server 2008. Integrated with the newly re-architected Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0, ASP.NET, and the Microsoft .NET Framework, Windows Web Server 2008 helps enable any organization rapidly deploy Web pages, Web sites, Web applications and Web services.

•Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems. It is optimized for large databases, and line-of-business and custom applications, providing high availability and scalability up to 64 processors to meet the needs of the most demanding and mission-critical solutions. Support for Itanium-based systems will now be offered through the new Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems edition, targeted at customers using the Intel Itanium platform and designed for these specific workloads.

*If you don't know it already Hyper-V is virtualization technology that MS is building into 2008. More info can be found here

Windows 7 - Proposed Feature List Leaked

Microsoft about a year ago started collecting a wish list form asking people what features they would like to see in the next version of Windows, currently code-named Windows 7. The top features in this list were recently leaked to the public.

The features are listed in no particular order, but they break down into various categories depending on what part of Windows the feature request falls under. Many requests for improvements in Internet Explorer, such as a session restore function, are fairly obvious wishes for features that already exist in competitive products such as Firefox and Opera. Other suggestions, such as a tabbed Windows Explorer, look for features from web browsers to migrate into the general user interface. Also a built-in video and audio codec manager which is much needed in windows vista media player 11.

For the Complete list see the following here . The feedback program that collected this list is Microsoft’s means of getting user suggestions for the Windows development team to analyze and possibly implement in the next version of Windows 7 (next release after Windows Vista).

There are also requests for old features which have fallen by the wayside to be brought back, such as the return of domain lists at the welcome screen to ease the login process and the ability to install outlook express on Vista and future versions.

The Windows 7 team has been allegedly directed to look at all major desktop operating systems, including the latest Linux distributions and Apple's OS X Leopard, but this was more for general impressions than to look for specific features to implement. Development of Windows 7, which is being built off the Windows Vista code base, so far with about half of the desired features already implemented.

DeskScapes 2.0: Animated wallpapers no longer just for the Vista elite

Animated wallpapers have been one of the “Extras” that Microsoft has touted as a selling point for customers of its priciest Windows Vista SKU. But now Stardock is bringing animated wallpapers to the Vista masses.

DeskScapes 2.0: Animated wallpapers no longer just for the Vista eliteStardock, a Gold Certified Microsoft partner, worked with Microsoft on DreamScene — a desktop-display feature that allows users to make looped, full-motion video their desktop wallpaper (as opposed to using static images only for background wallpaper). After a number of delays, Microsoft finally released DreamScene in September 2007.
Stardock helped to create much of the initial wallpaper content for DreamScene and then went on to release DeskScapes 1.0 for Vista Ultimate users interested in enhancing DreamScene.

With DeskScapes 2.0, Stardock has decided to make animated wallpapers avaialble to users of Vista Business, Home Premium and Ultimate users. The Standard edition of the product will be available as a free download; an enhanced version with additional features and “premium” content also will be availbale for $19.95.

Stardock plans to provide more information about its DeskScapes 2.0 plans on November 14, and to release a beta version of the technology “shortly,” company officials said. The final DeskScapes 2.0 release will be ready by February 2008, according to Stardock.

Stardock emphasizes that DeskScapes, though animated, use virtually no CPU power. Users will be able to configure the performance of animated wallpapers based on their system requirements. Settings are so granular that users will be able to have their wallpapers change, based on the time of day, and configure dynamic “dreams” independently.

Microsoft has said it plans to continue to release new premium “Extras” to entice users to buy premium versions of Windows. Looks like the company will have to look beyond animated wallpapers, now that Stardock is leveling the playing field in that area.

Vista Service Pack Hotfix For New Hardware Installs

Microsoft released a new hotfix to the public which deals with issues users have encountered whe installing new hardware, specially when installing USB devices. This hotfix is one of many that will be part of the official Vista Service Pack 1 release early next year.

The symptom is when you are trying to install the new hardware you would a message similar to this one:

Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device"
or
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it."

The cause of these errors is claimed to due to a Infcache.1 file that is in the %Windir%\System32 folder missing, deleted or corrupted. If the Infcache.1 file is deleted or corrupted, Windows Vista does not re-create the Infcache.1 file.

This hotfix replaces hotfix 937187. To get the new fix contact microsoft support or try doing the Live Update for vista.

Group Policy Revolution Coming Up!

It's exciting, fantastic, amazing, wonderful and totally cool - Microsoft has FINALLY announced what is going to happen with the PolicyMaker stuff they got when taking over DesktopStandards... It's going to be released with Windows Server 2008 as many of us had hoped for!

This is just GREAT I can tell you - and it will available to the public with the RC1 release of Windows Server 2008, maybe even before as a separate Beta program I'm told...

Microsoft decided to call it "Group Policy Preferences" or just "GP Preferences". So, what can we do with this you ask? Well, here's some of it:

As you can see, it's quite impressive and something that will make companies around the world turn to Windows Server 2008 ASAP... I think and hope anyway!

The client part, a necessary extension which must be installed on the client, will be ready for Windows XP/2003/Vista - and in both x86 and x64 editions. Windows Server 2008 already includes the CSE (Client Side Extension).

There's SO much to tell, and SO little time... But, a Whitepaper is ready (a REALLY nice of the kind) thank you Microsoft!

Disable DHCP with DSL connections

If you use a DSL modem to connect to the Internet, and you dial the connection directly from your computer, you may notice a rather long delay between the time the Windows desktop appears when booting up and when you can actually dial your connection. This delay can sometimes be up to two or three minutes, and can be extremely frustrating since it tends to lag other applications as well. The source of this delay is Windows XP attempting to locate an IP address for the network adaptor you are using to connect to the DSL modem. (more…)

Download Latest Build of Vista SP1 Beta from Microsoft

Currently, Microsoft has opened up the beta testing process of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta to over 12,000 testers, also involved in trying the development milestones of Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Server 2008. But a little hack is all that it takes to change this, and expand the test driving to all Vista users. In the last week of September, the Redmond company made available the first beta for Vista SP1 taking the operating system out of beta preview stage. By mid October, a registry hack was in place designed to permit users to
access and download Vista SP1 Beta Build 6001.16659 straight from Microsoft, via Windows Update. (more…)
