Adobe Reader flaw confirmed

The latest flaws in Acrobat reader have been annoying at best, and very dangerous to your network at worst.

A few weeks back a security researcher claimed that he found a flaw that was in just about every version of Acrobat Reader that would allow him to take control of a PC.

Petko Petkov, a U.K.-based researcher who found the flaw claimed in a blog posting two weeks ago:

"Adobe Acrobat/Reader PDF documents can be used to compromise your Windows box - Completely!!! Invisibly and unwillingly!!! All it takes is to open a PDF document or stumble across a page that embeds one."

Adobe finally awoke from their slumber and confirmed the bug. Their fix is amusing. Since the flaw exploits the use of the mailto: url link, they walk you through instructions on how to remove / disable the mailto link!

So that means you no longer can click on an email link and have it launch your email. I think I don't want to completely break my browser while they take their time finding a fix.

I have a better idea. Get rid of Acrobat off your network, and use a third party reader like foxit (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/)

Here We Go …

Since I don't really know how to build a computer, the first item to order would seem to be the case. Then I can visualize how everything will fit. I've chosen the full-size Sonata III 500 case, billed as the quietest case in captivity. We'll see. Corner view, side panel on

It's glossy black, because (I think) most of the people who build their own PC's are "gamers" who want the fastest computer on the block, or at least the fastest that they can afford, for running their graphics-intensive computer games. For some reason, gamers seem to like black, shiny things, or very colorful things: computers, web sites, graphics cards, on and on. It's OK with me - black is a fine color for computers, and most accessories like DVD drives can be ordered in black.

The complaint from people who have ordered the Sonata III 500 is that the glossy black finish is easily marked. If that happens it'll be too bad, but I don't really care that much. If it's not quiet, I'll care a lot more.

Side view, panel off It is now on order for $117.00 from ZipZoomFly.com, shipping included, the lowest-cost source I could find at the moment I ordered it. Not bad, really, since it includes the power supply. Another company, TigerDirect, had it for less, but as I shopped around the price there suddenly jumped up. That might have been a coincidence, but I suspect that their computer thought I was getting serious and bumped up the price. They lost the sale.

More Specifications: When I receive it, I'll see whether it comes with anything else, such as power supply cables, screws, and other necessary parts. Then the next step is to order the motherboard, CPU, memory, graphics card, Vista, DVD drive, and at least one hard drive. When those arrive I'll try to start it up and install Vista. Some of these parts have a limited return period, so I will wait until I need them and order them all at once. Learning experiences will follow!

At this moment my intention is to install the 64-bit version of Vista, 4 Gb memory, and Raid 1 disks (2 disks, mirrored). The materials list looks like this. If you have any suggestions I'm all ears (eyes).

Well I found another annoying bug.
When you open a remote control session and you dont select open in a new window. You will loose all keyboard activity untill you close your complete browser.
ctrl+c does not work!

Well I'm beginning to think this was a hasty release of logmein.

Games for Windows LIVE 1.2 Coming Soon

This evening, Xbox Live's Major Nelson revealed some tidbits on an upcoming update to Games for Windows - LIVE for the PC.

As you know, several games have launched under Games for Windows - LIVE that allow PC Games to tap into Xbox Live. Last May, I talked about my experience with Halo 2 for Windows Vista and a few months ago I also picked up Shadowrun. While Halo 2 for Windows Vista let me score achievements and add to my gamerscore - Shadowrun goes cross-platform by letting me play with gamers who are playing Shadowrun on their Xbox 360 consoles.

Like with Dashboard Updates to the Xbox 360, Microsoft can also update the Games for Windows - LIVE components within PC games such as Halo 2 for Windows Vista and Shadowrun that add functionality and bug fixes. Major Nelson highlights several changes coming with the 1.2 release:

I look forward to seeing these improvements for the 1.2 release for Games for Windows - LIVE. Major Nelson says we can expect to see this update available sometime next month.

Someone was a big fan of orange…

Microsoft Forefront website

Manager: I want the website to stand out as much as possible. I’m a big fan of orange and robots.
Designer: Get this. First, the whole page is pure orange. Then a robot will appear, but not for long. It will then fade to reveal more orange. My inspiration is the sun.
Manager: Is your last name da Vinci cause that’s brilliant! Implement it right away.
